PRESS RELEASE

This past weekend the Ledyard High School Vocal Jazz Ensemble won, for a third time, the Large Vocal Jazz Division of the 2000 Berklee College of Music High School Jazz Festival in Boston, Mass. Ledyard has participated in the festival since 1993 and won 1st place in Vocal Jazz in 1995, 1998 and now in 2000 beating eleven other vocal jazz ensemblee in the large school division from throughout New England, New York and New Jersey. The Ledyard Vocal Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Department Chairman Jamie Spillane is one of 12 choirs at Ledyard High School that involve over 400 students making it the largest choral program in Connecticut and one of the largest and most successful choral programs in the United States.

The previous week the vocal jazz ensemble traveled to Baltimore, Maryland to perform at the Eastern United States Convention of the American Choral Director's Association. After their performance, they were treated to an enthusiastic standing ovation by an audience of over 500 choral directors from the northeastern states. They are only the third Connecticut high school group in ten years to be selected by an arduous audition process for this honor.

At Ledyard, there are nearly 650 students out of 1080 involved in music performing groups and classes and this year, Ledyard High School was the only high school music program in Connecticut to be honored as a "Grammy Signature School" by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences. Ledyard placed 39 student musicians in the CMEA Eastern Region Festival in January and 14 students in the CMEA All-state Festival to be held at the end of March.

Further events this spring include a complete performance of the Mozart Requiem with full orchestra and soloists at St. Mary Star of the Sea church in New London on April 13th, performances of the Broadway Musical Guys & Dolls in May, the perennially sold out Pops Concerts in June, and the crowning achievement of the Chamber Choir and Brass Quintet's tour in June to England and France with performances planned at Salisbury, Coventry, Chichester, and Notre Dame Cathedrals and Great St. Mary's Church in Cambridge.
