Ledyard High School Percussion Instructor, Kerry Robinson, began
performing with her 5th grade band, in Madison, CT, and by high
school, was the recipient of numerous music awards, including the John
Philip Sousa Award for Music Excellence and twice, the National Who's
Who In Music Award. Kerry was also elected Band President by her
peers in her senior year of high school. In a ground-breaking move,
Miss Robinson changed decades of tradition by becoming the first female
percussionist to perform with the long-time all male Sailing Masters
ancient fife and drum corps of Essex, CT. Throughout Miss Robinson's
years at the University of Rhode Island, where she studied with
percussionist Ron Stabile, she both performed in and directed the URI
Percussion Ensemble, as well as performed with the URI Wind Ensemble,
Orchestra, Chorus, Jazz Big Band, and the Concert and Marching Bands.
While in college, Miss Robinson was both a member and then
Vice-President of the National Honorary Band Fraternity, Kappa Kappa
Psi, for 4 years. Noteworthy performances include guest appearances
with the Boston Festival Orchestra, the Brown University Wind
Ensemble, as well as performing and contracting for several of URI's
Theatre Department musicals. While exploring other opportunities in
the field of music, Miss Robinson had the privilege of producing the
URI Jazz & World Music Festival, bringing in world renowned artists
such as Gary Burton, the Mandala Folk Dance Ensemble, Joanne Brackeen,
and Mick Goodrick. Kerry was also selected for the New England
Intercollegiate Honor Band at Yale University, served as Percussion
Instructor for Westerly High School for 4 years, and has privately
tutored numerous students. Ms. Robinson is currently working as a
Certified Picture Framer, and continues to teach and direct percussion
and marching groups, and works as a freelance percussionist in a wide
variety of musical settings, from orchestral to chamber music, jazz
and percussion ensembles.
