This course will focus on the development of jazz with emphasis on the blues. The blues traditions and important blues artists will be studied in depth. Prominent Jazz artists will be studied to illustrate the development of jazz. The course is divided into 3 types of activities:
- Listening
- Performing
- Lecture
Grades are earned based on the following:
PARTICIPATION 50% of your grade will be based on what you do in the classroom.
You are expected to:
- be on time to class
- have your instrument in good working condition for each class
- have all jazz lab handouts in a 3-ring notebook
- have your 3-ring notebook with jazz lab handouts for each class
- failure at any of the above will result in a zero for the day
- you are allotted one "freebie"
TESTS 50% of your grade will be based on your performance on tests. Some tests will be written, most tests will be playing your instrument.
HOMEWORK The word homework means "practice outside of class", most likely at home. You will be given assignments and you will be expected to practice them before the next class. There is no "homework" grade given, I will evaluate (test) each of you on the current assignment each class period. You will receive a test grade for each assignment.
Your grade for any given class will have two parts, the participation grade, and the test grade. You should never leave class without knowing what that night's assignment is.
Your first homework assignment is to bring the following items to the next class:
- a 3-ring notebook with a section for Jazz Lab
- an assignment notebook
- your instrument in good working condition
